CHRISTCHURCH FOOD BANK

** The Christchurch Foodbank+  made a video in the summer that was filmed here at St Joseph’s by the FB+ team.   It is really good and well worth watching.  View the video here:  https://youtu.be/NBtWzLdJU14

Christchurch Food Bank (CFB) was created in 2001 from a partnership between the 20 Churches of Christchurch (in which St Joseph’s is active) and Faithworks Wessex, FFW, a registered Company and Charity.

The Foodbank provides tinned and packaged food sufficient for 3 days to those in crisis who are referred to it from a wide variety of ‘Referrers’. The supply will be repeated if necessary. Of those using the Food Bank, 55% call on us just once.

The CFB has operated from the ‘Old Chapel’ at St Joseph’s with the generous support of that community since 2012. To date some 16,500 have drawn food from the CFB. School meal replacements in the holidays represent nearly half the total support provided.

Food is donated via the Churches, collection points in Supermarkets and various work-based initiatives. It is run by 30 + volunteers, many from St Joseph’s, co-ordinated by Lyn Coghlan. Tracy Blick, the only paid employee and wonderful example of Christian witness provides the Project Coordination.

FWW provides the legal framework, record keeping and management guidance. Over the years the services offered have been extended. Guidance to various Counselling services is extensive including debt counselling. Cookery courses are offered to help with diet and ‘the budget’. Essential furniture can be provided for ‘void’ housing. More recently the CFB+ has commenced acting as a homeless drop-in-centre. Further development is planned.

The CFB+ is now widely regarded as the primary local charity for those in crisis enjoying the support of our local MP, Council and Agencies as well as the people of Christchurch. It is a very tangible witness of Christians working together to practically demonstrate God’s love in action.
